Panchang (पंचांग) is the Hindu calendar and almanac that follows traditional units of Indian timekeeping. The word "Panchang" is derived from Sanskrit — "Panch" meaning five and "Ang" meaning limb, referring to the five elements that make up the Panchang:
- Tithi (तिथि) — Lunar day, one of 30 divisions of a lunar month
- Nakshatra (नक्षत्र) — Lunar mansion or constellation the Moon occupies
- Yoga (योग) — Auspicious or inauspicious period based on Sun-Moon angular relationship
- Karana (करण) — Half of a Tithi, used for determining muhurat
- Var (वार) — Day of the week
The Panchang is used to determine auspicious timings (muhurat) for important events such as weddings, housewarming ceremonies, business ventures, and religious rituals. It also provides information about Rahu Kaal, which is considered an inauspicious period during each day.
